Young tenant goes from BHP Youth Board to launch career in TV news

A young Brent Housing Partnership (BHP) tenant and Youth Board member has been selected for a highly competitive digital apprenticeship with ITN (Independent Television News).Savannah

Savannah Mullings-Johnson, from Kingsbury, began a full time apprenticeship this year with ITN which involves working across a range of their services including Channel 4 News, ITV News, and Channel 5 News.

The scheme also involves a compulsory study unit for which participants are required to undertake a Level 3 Creative and Digital Media course. The apprenticeship is divided into three phases. Phase 1 involves shadowing different areas of the business and observing the different roles journalists play. Phase 2 involves more hands-on activity and participants are given the opportunity to take on more practical roles. Phase 3 is the 'specialisation' stage. During this stage, apprentices will pick a specialism and a preferred role which will essentially become their full time position for the last six months of the scheme.

Savannah has already been involved in producing news pieces and has organised the whole process including finding guests, research, organising locations, editing and ensuring that the news item was completed on time.

Savannah who is a member of the BHP Youth Board and regularly writes articles for the BHP youth magazine ‘Our Say’ and blog said: “I am really enjoying my apprenticeship with ITN. It has given me a great deal of exposure in the media industry, I have had the opportunity to move across three newsrooms as well as network with some of the biggest journalists in the industry. There has been a few standout moments for me, including meeting my idol Charlene White (ITV News Presenter) during my induction week. Meeting Charlene was such a surreal experience and she gave me invaluable advice.”

If anyone wants to ask Savannah a question about her apprenticeship experience, or ask advice about working in journalism. Please contact BHP on and we will arrange for Savannah to answer your questions.
